The sixth instalment of the Real Contenders got underway on 16th May at the Beachcomber Starlight rooms at 7.30pm, to a full house. The event attracted competitors from all around the region and on the show were fighters from the following gym’s. Kendoso Grimsby, Rick North Grimsby, Impact Sleaford, Lincoln Black Dragons Lincoln and Fudoshin Newark along with the host club Grimsby Martial Arts. There were also appearances by independent fighters who had trained themselves.
The first fight of the night was between a ring newcomer of Penny Laity (GMAA) versus a more experienced opponent Karen Bailey (Impact). Although Penny put up a great fight, in the end the result went to the stronger fighter, Karen(Impact), though she was stunned in the second round by a good 1-2 combination. As the night progressed, the atmosphere rose and the fighting intensified with good display put on by all the fighters, especially those that had not fought before. Even though loosing his maiden bout Elys Cowper(GMAA) put on a brave display but eventually lost to Sam McSpadden (Kendoso) who was the better fighter on the night. Nicky Horsewood (GMAA) came away with a great win over the talented Simon Yates(LBD) put his skill proved a little to much for his opponent. Nick Bass(Rick North Gym) put on an excellent display against James Johnson(LBD) and came away with a win. As did Steve Wright(Independent) who had a difficult battle with Chris Denford(Independent). Ben Tinsley(GMAA) started his fight brightly but eventually lost to Richard Bourne (Impact).
The 2 notable fights of the night were Emma Leam(GMAA) versus Gemma Marshall(Fudoshin) and Matthew Marrek(GMAA) versus Paul Mayfield(LBD). Emma’s opponent came into the ring with a similar record and the first 2 rounds were very close though Gemma’s strength was a little to much in the 3rd round and eventually came out the winner. Matthew has become a very capable fighter after his first few defeats and came into this fight full of confidence having won recently in Sheffield. His opponent was also a very capable , having fought for titles in the past and this showed in the opening round, pushing Matthew onto the back foot for most of the round. However things changed in the second round and Matthew started to turn on the pressure with a superb spinning hook kick that connected well on his opponents face. The third round was much the same though his opponent always looked dangerous and it was a very close win, going to Matthew(GMAA).
The Grimsby Martial Arts Academy would like to thank all the fighters and their coaches for taking part in the show, all the helpers, sponsors and to advise that the next show is planned for November 14th . Those wishing to train at the GMAA can goto www.gmaa.co.uk or drop into the club on Kent Street Grimsby Mon-Thur 6-8pm.
